Preventative Loss Ideas
By Jim D. Fermo, Ph.D., CEO of Industrial Quality Services
Spiraling Medical Costs, loss of time on the job, insurance rates, employee replacement, training, benefits, where does it all end?
The new California’s Worker Compensation laws offer some relief and yet not enough. Functional Capacity Evaluations (FCE) are ever growing in demand.
How are FCEs used to reduce revenue losses? Don't employment physicals provide a baseline of the employee’s health? Employment physicals are missing some key evaluations such as:
- Can the employee really perform the day-to-day physical rigors of the job?
- Did the employee have a previous injury that could cause another claim while under current employment?
- Is the injured employee ready to come back to work or is the time away from the job excessive as benefits continue to be prolonged?
How does the Functional Capacity Evaluation assist in reducing work injuries?
The Pre-Employment FCE
The prospective employee must pass tests for endurance, physical strength and fine motor skills. Regardless of whether the prospect can or cannot complete the rigors of the FCE, a full report is presented to management to assist in the hiring decision process. Report turn around time is approximately 24 Hours.
Worker’s Comp. FCE
This FCE requires a few hours of rigorous testing. The employer, insurance carrier or physician receives a report that objectively defines the patient’s ability or deficits in relationship to their current job requirements. Restrictions are noted in the report.
In a recent study by Dr. David A. Fishbain, “If a patient with a pain level of 5.4 could pass the Dictionary of Occupational Titles job factor requirements, he or she would have a 75% chance of being employed at 30 months after treatment at a pain facility”.
If you would like more information please feel free to call Industrial Quality Services at (818) 326-9499. Our services cover most of the State of California. We are both in facilities and offer mobile FCEs as well. Our goal is to help reduce the expenses of work relate injuries and re-injuries.
